Today’s post is about supporting a healthy functioning endocrine and nervous system.
Some days you feel lousy, anxious, irritable and lack focus. Other days, you’re on top of the world and are able to power through your tasks at work and home, and feel relaxed and focused. But why is it that we can change so much from day to day? How can we support our body to have healthy functioning signals from our brain to our body systems and allow us to be regularly productive and achieve the things we set out to achieve.
The body is wired up with intense networks of nerves, cells, muscles and blood vessels. Signals are sent from our brain to the target organ and from organs back our brain via feedback mechanisms that ensure we are in a constant state of ‘homeostasis’ (a constant state of equilibrium and balance-where the body is functional and healthy free of disease and illness).
Neurotransmitters are important chemical messengers that regulate processes such as energy levels, reaction, sleep, mood and muscular activity.
Amino acids are a precursor (available through diet) for neurotransmitters and help activate them in order for them to be released in the body and put to use!
So, specifically… How can we address our dietary intakes of certain foods to aid in the proper functioning of neurotransmitters and so, regulate our mood, sleep and energy levels, muscular functioning and response to stressful situations?
Major Vitamins that support these concepts are:
- Vitamin B-12: abundant in salmon lamb and beef, this B vitamin aids in the production of neurotransmitters along with folate and B-6
- Vitamin B-9 (folate): abundant in leafy greens, this B vitamin helps with Amino acid metabolism and so, is helpful in the precursor activities of neurotransmitter release
- Vitamin B-6: abundant in turkey, beef, chicken and tuna, this B vitamin is involved in the production of neurotransmitters and amino acid metabolism.
There you go! I hope you enjoyed today’s post…until next time…eat clean…get plenty of sunshine, sleep and water!
